G Adventures Recognized in OUTSIDE’s Best Places to Work 2015

Boston, MA (November 16, 2015) – G Adventures, the world’s largest, independent, small group adventure tour operator, has been selected by OUTSIDE as one of the country’s 100 Best Places to Work for 2015 (#49). It is one of only ten travel and adventure companies honored on this year’s list.

Each year, OUTSIDE’s Best Places to Work list recognizes the top 100 companies in the United States that help their employees strike the ideal balance between work and play. These companies encourage employees to lead an active lifestyle, are eco-conscious and prioritize giving back to the community.

Founded by Canadian entrepreneur Bruce Poon Tip in 1990, G Adventures places a happy, connected, empowered culture of purpose-driven employees, as among its top corporate priorities.

“A big part of our success has been defining, owning and holding ourselves up to our core values, while working to transcend our industry. We believe that sustainable travel, done right, can be the greatest form of wealth distribution and peace building in the world,” said Poon Tip.

“G Adventures’ employees share an enthusiastic love for changing people’s lives; for leading with service; for embracing the bizarre; for doing the right thing; and for creating happiness and a sense of community. We put these core values on our brochures, our t-shirts, our walls and everywhere else we can think of, so that together, we work with shared purpose.”

In 2008, with the belief that traditional Human Resource departments don’t inspire people to do extraordinary work, Poon Tip took the radical approach of reinventing his company’s approach to people management by declaring “death to HR”, even giving it a symbolic funeral. From there, the company’s “Talent Agency” was created to look after recruitment and career development, and its “G Force” group was tasked with supporting company culture and spreading core values and positive recognition among the company’s largely Millennial-aged employees, who today live and work on five continents.

G Adventures in the U.S. has quickly become the operator’s third largest market, globally. The U.S. division has seen continued growth since its settlement here in 2010, experiencing over 32 percent growth in sales in 2015.

“It is a huge honor and motivator to be recognized by a prominent U.S. media brand like OUTSIDE, whose readers we share so many interests with,” said Ben Perlo, Managing Director for G Adventures in the United States. “With a new U.S. hub in Boston and a growing team of people spread out across the continental U.S., this recognition will further help us increase brand awareness and attract top, like-minded talent to G Adventures’ mission of changing people’s lives through travel -- and have fun while doing it.”

Employees in the U.S. share a new office in downtown Boston, with playful, themed conference rooms inspired by Jim Henson and Neil Armstrong – inspiring and adventurous Americans who helped change the world. Full time G Adventures staff members are entitled to a free trip for each year worked, plus generous vacation leave, with an additional “Me day”, “We day” and “G day” off that are offered to employees for pursuing personal and charitable interests. The annual company retreat in Toronto – “G Stock” – is so popular that lottery tickets are awarded to several hundred alternating attendees from all over the world, while ‘Beer o’clock’ Fridays celebrate the week that was, all year round.

“The companies recognized in this year’s Best Places to Work list are the gold standard for stellar work environments that seek to empower their employees both in and out of the office,”said OUTSIDE Online Editor Scott Rosenfield. “The new categories in this year’s list serve to highlight outstanding workplaces in distinctive fields—making it all the easier for our readers to find their dream jobs.”

To find the best places to work in the United States in 2015, OUTSIDE conducted a rigorous vetting process in partnership with the Best Companies Group to assess the policies, practices and demographics of hundreds of companies. OUTSIDE’s Best Places to Work 2015 was driven by employee reviews of their workplaces, taking into account factors like corporate culture, role satisfaction, work environment and overall employee engagement. The Best Places to Work list represents the cream of the crop: companies that are empowering their employees to live bigger, better lives.
