Hungary Opens Its Doors to European Visitors

Long-awaited moment: following the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hungary officially opens its doors to visitors from all Schengen countries. Hotels, beaches, restaurants, and spas are open without the obligation of holding any immunity certificate.

Budapest, July 5th, 2021 - After reaching the significant 5,5 million vaccinated mark, another long-awaited stage of reopening took effect in Hungary. While many restrictions have already been lifted in recent months, everyday life in the country is going further back to normal: mandatory mask wearing is lifted at all places indoors and outdoors – except for health- and social care institutions –, while hotels, beaches, restaurants, and spas are open to the public without the obligation of holding an immunity certificate. This applies to all Hungarian citizens as well as all international visitors. Hungary lifted internal border controls at its Schengen borders as of the 23rd of June, while the European Union immunity certificate (formally known as the “EU Digital Green Certificate”, or “EU Green Pass”) is available for travel within the EU form the 1st of July. The certificate is valid throughout the EU, so similarly to all other EU countries, Hungary also offers free entry to EU immunity certificate holders.

This all means that those arriving to Hungary from Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Romania by any means of land transport can do so practically without restrictions, with no quarantine or additional testing obligation. However, anyone arriving to Hungary by plane must present an EU immunity certificate.

In addition to the EU immunity certificate, Hungary also concluded bilateral agreements with 17 countries allowing epidemiologically unrestricted entry at the borders based on bilateral recognition of the vaccination certificates. You can find the list of countries on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Under the new rules all domestic and international guests can book and stay at commercial accommodations without any restrictions. Everyone is free to dine on the terraces or in the interiors of all restaurants in Hungary. Feel free to enjoy the country's rich offer of spas and thermal baths. Theaters, cinemas, and classical music concerts are open for everyone as well. A safe holiday, of course, is ensured by the high standards of hygiene required officially from all public places and service providers. However, to ensure the health and safety of all visitors, mass events offering no fixed seating – concerts, festivals, night music venues – are still accessible for immunity certificate holders only.

We look forward to welcoming everyone in our beautiful country, we hope to see you soon!
