Delays and Cancellations Disrupt Travel from El Paso to Barcelona to Canada

Despite the sunny weather, air travel had a bumpy day yesterday, as travelers tried to navigate last-minute airport closures in El Paso and Barcelona—and Air Transat cancelled all flights to the United States.

In El Paso, the FAA announced an immediate closure for 10 days due to “special security reasons”—and just a few hours later, reopened it. Various reports attribute the closure to drones; some say it was the US military testing drones, some say it was an incursion of foreign drones, and some say it was a party balloon incorrectly identified as a drone.

In Barcelona, meanwhile, 148 departures and arrivals at El Prat airport were cancelled, affecting travel to Madrid and across Europe, and remaining restrictions may cause further delays and cancellations…
