What U.S. Air Travelers Actually Get — and Don’t — After the DOT’s Rule Reversal

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has pulled back a major proposed consumer protection from the previous administration: a rule that would have required airlines to pay passengers for long delays or cancellations caused by the airline itself.

The DOT’s previous proposal aimed to make airlines pay cash when delays or cancellations were the airline’s fault — for example, when there was a mechanical problem or a crew-scheduling issue. The payouts would have worked somewhat like Europe’s rules, where compensation is standard. But before the proposal took effect, the DOT withdrew it, saying it would be too costly for airlines and might lead to higher fares.

As a result, nothing about compensation is changing. U.S. travelers…
