Thanksgivin’ Turbulence—What Travel Advisors Should Know Before the Tofurky Hits the Fan

OK, this is rea l: the system is creaking. As the U.S. heads toward Thanksgiving travel, travel advisors are likely facing a perfect storm of factors: record-holiday traveler volumes, a federal government shutdown creating staffing shortfalls, and the usual chaos of late-November skies. For advisors, this means the possibility of a high-stress holiday season.
The federal shutdown that started October 1 means thousands of federal workers (including many in aviation) are working without pay or are furloughed. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), controller and security-screen staffing shortages are already contributing to delays—one recent estimate shows staffing-related delays jumping from the historical ~5% to around 50% of delay causes. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has indicated that delays are 10 times more likely now due to air…
