It is very true that language shapes how we see the world. But sometimes the most profound human experiences slip through the cracks of our vocabulary. While English boasts an amazing degree of flexibility in its diction and willingness to adopt and evolve, there are many concepts from other cultures that we can only approximate with clunky phrases or lengthy explanations. These often nearly untranslatable words reveal entire dimensions of human experience that we all struggle to articulate coherently. What's fascinating is that many of these "foreign" concepts actually describe experiences deeply familiar to North Americans and English speakers—but we often struggle for the precise words to capture them.
