One of my most enduring memories from our winter cruise on the Danube is from the morning we spent passing Dürnstein. We were making our way to Weißenkirchen, cruising on AmaMagna, when the fairy-tale-like town came into view, easily identifiable by its blue-and-white tower, known as Dürnstein Abbey. A rare Category 2 tropical cyclone has stalled Royal Caribbean and Carnival ships off the southeastern coast of Australia coast and shut down the port of Brisbane, along with its trains and buses. Local authorities have issued “prepare to evacuate” warnings for parts of Australia’s third-largest city.

The first cyclone here in 50 years, Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall late today (Friday) or early Saturday, bringing winds up to 95 mph; on Thursday mariners reported record-breaking waves.
