On June 13, 1886, the newly incorporated city of Vancouver, British Columbia was clearing brush out of the areas between Main and Cambie streets. A controlled burn fire was started to burn the brush and debris. Suddenly, a strong wind rose off the water and fanned the flames out of control. Practically the entire city was burned to the ground.
