Barcelona seeks to curb effects of overtourism

Tourism has returned to Spain in a massive wave of visitors to Barcelona. In response to complaints about overtourism, municipal authorities in Barcelona have taken new measures seeking to crack down on tour companies and behavior viewed as undesirable and disruptive. As a part of the new restrictive measures, tour operators have been ordered to cease the use of megaphones on tours through the city, and to re-work their routes through the city to minimize the inconvenience to residents and to adhere to routes limited to 24 streets in city center.  Tour leaders are required to choose stops along the way where space allows for plenty of pedestrian traffic.

Spain's Renfe to make local train journeys free from September through year's end

Spain's Renfe Passenger train

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Tuesday that all public transport on short and medium-distance trains will be operated free of charge to the public for the last four months of 2022. All commuter trains and mid-distance regional lines covering journeys of less than 300km run by Renfe, the national rail operator, will be free from September through the end of December. The program applies only to multi-trip tickets, not to single, one-way fares. Multi-journey trips include a minimum of 10 round-trip tickets. In June, Renfe had already introduced a 50% reduction in fares.

The reduction in fares is a national response to the rising cost of living in Spain and other countries worldwide.…
