Last week we spoke of tomorrow's client, this week, let’s talk about tomorrow’s traveler. Last week was a week of good news for us.  The new Johnson & Johnson vaccine received emergency approval and is likely shipping to states as this column is published. As we know, it is a single-dose vaccine and when combined with the other two, we are poised to really get the vaccination effort underway in earnest. And that is great news for the industry and for travelers. And while the pandemic has harmed us in many ways, travelers now have an opportunity to press a reset button. And it is partially up to us to see to it that tomorrow’s traveler does not screw it up.

As a nation, we are a jaded lot. From Willy Loman to the used-auto hucksters in countless movies, the public in general holds sales people rather low on the scale of esteem. Indeed, most of the people you encounter are so afraid of being "sold" something that they refuse to speak with sales people when they enter a store or walk onto a car lot. "I'm just looking" is used as the warding spell against the sales person, and woe to the one who persists beyond that point.

Most travel consultants share this cultural bias against "sales." Ironic, isn't…

I was reminded recently of a famous line in a movie with Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger. The sound bite went viral with the line, “You had me at hello.” This clearly endorsed the belief that first impressions are significant. (The movie was Jerry Maguire.)

A similar situation surfaced this week. I thought it might serve as a good reminder in this week’s Cup of Mo-Jo.
