Can Saudi Arabia become a tourist hotspot?
It's got year-round sunshine. It's got incredible beaches. It's got ancient historical sites. It's got theme parks. It's got luxury hotels. It's got adventure. It's got relaxation. So why isn't this destination a hotspot for tourists? Because it's Saudi Arabia, and until now, unless they were making a religious pilgrimage to Mecca or were in town for business, tourists weren't exactly lining up to visit. The…

When Nicolette Kay and her family were dreaming of their next vacation, her husband made what he thought was a joke: why not spend two weeks in Hawaii? A private view: explore the quieter side of Florence
It’s midnight, and I am lost in Florence. I’m on a bike without lights (almost no one has lights on their bikes in central Florence, just as no one has a helmet) and whichever turn I take to get me to the River Arno seems to get me back to the Duomo. But what a sight it is, its magnificent light and dark marble rising majestically out of the night. I have a bag of locally made chocolate in my basket…

The rise in plant-based eating has inevitably led to more demand for vegan food tours around the world. The U.K. and Canada are also seeing…

Are You Protected If Your Airline Goes Bankrupt? Here’s How To Make Sure You’re Covered
We seem to be living through a particularly tumultuous year for airlines. Though profits are robust for some carriers, a number of others are either struggling or failing outright, especially long-haul low cost airlines and holiday/leisure operators. The most recent to go bust, Thomas Cook in the UK, made headlines because of the 150,000 people who were left briefly stranded in holiday destinations after…

6 Tips for Staying in a Hotel or Airbnb With a Baby From Parents Who Have Done It
When my husband and I brought our 9-month-old son on a weekend getaway to a mountain cabin, we planned and packed to a level that would challenge a military operation. Yet, two days into what was supposed to be a four-day trip, we packed it all up and went home. Nothing was going right. Our son was up in the night, seemed to have an upset stomach, and was generally cranky.…

It’s all fun and games until Thomas Cook goes belly up
by John Frenaye Monday September 30, 2019
When a 178-year old company goes belly up it is no fun for anyone! Six hundred thousand travelers were stranded around the globe as the Thomas Cook Group ceased operations on September 22, 2019. And while this was a nightmare for the British government who repatriated 150,000 residents at no cost to the travelers, many others were not so lucky. But the collapse of the world’s oldest travel brand was not the only casualty.
Take Cook Travel, an air consolidator in New York. NOW LET ME BE CLEAR, THEY ARE FINE. THEY ARE STILL IN BUSINESS AND A GOOD AGENCY. But, undoubtedly for many years prior to the dissolution of Thomas Cook Group, I am confident that Cook Travel appreciated the boost. I am…

Training Your Clients
by Richard Earls Sunday September 29, 2019
Most travel agents who have been in the business for any period of time can tell stories of clients who, in some manner, disappointed the agent in the relationship. The client who took the agent's hard work and booked direct, or the client who could not be found when final payment was due. The client who goes to the airport without their documents and blames the agent. The client that won't return phone calls. The client who is upset that the agent cannot find a trip to Hawaii for 7 nights for $499. The client who discovers a cruise $50 cheaper on the internet and is unhappy. In almost every instance, however, the real root of the problem can be found in a failure of…

Sales Mistake #6: Becoming Distracted or, Not Loving The One You’re With
With so much going on in the world, it has become more difficult to focus on the task at hand. Multitasking seems to have become a survival skill. But here is where I disagree: Multitasking is a shortcut to disaster.
You can’t allow your attention span to drift away from what you are doing at the moment. Becoming distracted is often considered normal. You simply can’t be considered normal in this regard.
If your primary responsibility is to help people, then it is in your best interest to pay attention to the people you are trying to help. Reality teaches us, as well as my personal experience, that your mind will wander at times. If you have a short attention span (like I do), knowing that you…
